About CommunityLife Ministry

"A community of friends..." is a key part of the vision of Trinity Covenant Church. We want to be a church where people can share life with others.  At Trinity we call these gatherings CommunityLife Groups.  We believe the experience of life together in Biblical community in a small group is one of the bestfriends_laughing.jpg things we can do to foster spiritual transformation.

Because it can be hard to connect on Sunday morning, we’re committed to encouraging small groups of people to meet together.  Most CommunityLife groups come together to learn from God's Word and to care for each in the context of authentic relationships.  Other groups are connected by a shared affinity or interest.

Our hope is that you will find a place among Trinity's community of friends wherever you are on your spiritual journey.  Being in relationship with others is important for everyone's spiritual health and growth!

guide connecting with god

God has communicated with his people throughout the ages in many ways. Adam and Eve encountered him directly in the Garden of Eden, Teresa of Avila experienced him through visions, and Francis of Assisi heard his voice in nature. This book gives practical advice for connecting on a deeply personal level with God. Connecting with God uncovers new places to look for God, while providing reflection questions and activities to reinvigorate communication with God in such traditional areas as prayer and Bible study. Divided into twelve chapters conveniently organized for individual or group study, each section explores a different area in which we can deepen our individual communion with God.

guide learning from jesus

To Christians, Jesus is many things: the Son of God, the pivotal figure in whom we put our trust and who speaks on our behalf, a companion in the life of faith. But Jesus is also an incredible example of how to lead a faithful life. Jesus, as a human, walked on earth and confronted the same struggles that we face. Our primary mission as his followers is to learn from him -- to become his apprentices. In this book we seek to further our apprenticeship by studying everything from Jesus's interactions with those around him to the revolutionary wisdom recorded in the Gospels. Learning from Jesus is conveniently organized for individual or group study, and each section of this guide leads you further down the path to true discipleship.

guide living the mission

Living the Mission explores what it means to be a Christian today. By examining the early church's struggle in the wake of Jesus's devastating death and awe-inspiring resurrection in the book of Acts, we learn how we can follow Jesus, how Jesus is still with us in the Holy Spirit, and how we are called to form communities into which we are forever inviting others. Conveniently organized for individual or group study, Living the Mission explores the heart of what it means to follow Jesus and be a part of his church.

guide prayer and worship

Prayer and Worship compose the heart of the devotional life and are essential practices for a close relationship with God. But too often our prayer is nothing more than a checklist of requests, and our worship happens only in church. What does it mean to communicate with God? How do we enter his presence in the midst of our daily lives? Utilizing the beloved book of the Psalms, this guide reveals many different ways to come before God in prayer and worship, including wrestling with God, pleading with God, lamenting to God, and longing for God. Conveniently organized for individual or group study, Prayer and Worship offers insights and avenues to help us bring every part of our lives before God and truly enter his presence.

How did the first Christians practice their faith? The Didache, an early handbook of an anonymous Christian community, "is the most important book you've never heard of." It spells out a way of life for Jesus-followers, including how to love one another, how to practice the Eucharist, and how to take in wandering prophets.

Likely written before many of the New Testament books, this little-known text can enlighten the way that Christians are church, today. Tony Jones unpacks the ancient document with insight and perspective, and traces the life of a small house church in Missouri that is trying to live according to its precepts. Includes a new, contemporary English translation of the complete text of the Didache.

“The Jesus Creed is fresh, accessible, inviting, and compelling. And without cliches. Scot McKnight brings us into a conversation with Jesus in the places and conditions in which we live our ordinary lives.” —Eugene H. Peterson

What was spiritual formation like during the time of Jesus? As Scot McKnight points out, the early Christians didn’t sing in the choir or go to weekly Bible studies, and yet they matured inwardly in relationship with God as well as outwardly in their relationships with each other. How did this happen?

In The Jesus Creed DVD, explore with Scot how the great Shema of the Old Testament was transformed by our Lord into the focal point for spiritual maturity. According to the Jesus Creed (found in Mark 12:29-31), loving God and loving others are the greatest commandments.

This DVD works well as a stand alone study or it can be used in conjunction with the book, Forty Days Living the Jesus Creed.

Life happens fast. Each and every day you make decisions regarding who and what will receive your time, money, and attention. At some point you have realized there is not enough of you for all the demands and, if you are like many of us, you have probably anticipated eternity more than ever during these moments. But what if life is meant to be more than simply waiting for eternity?  In A Spiritual Road Map in a Mixed Up World, a study of 1 Thessalonians taught by Pastor Lance Witt, small group participants will work through thought-provoking questions and discussion prompting them to unpack the spiritual road map prepared for the Thessalonians and engage the group in deeper study, application, and prayer.

In Volume 1, small groups will begin seeing the map by unpacking topics such as spiritual growth, discipleship, pure motives, spiritual reproduction, and loving people that are outlined in the first three chapters of 1 Thessalonians. Participants will develop a firm understanding of the direction of the spiritual road map and build a practical application of the topics as they relate to their personal lives.

We are all, as Erwin Raphael McManus states, broken pieces of the image of God. And as Christians, too often we talk about God's ability to change lives without fully understanding how to access that power.

The reason is simple: we ourselves have never been radically transformed. McManus explains how many people unknowingly block God from changing us and teaches readers the "texture of the heart" required to unleash God's transforming power within us. He also demonstrates the passion and purpose that lie ahead when we undertake the journey that leads us to the true source, the very character of God. Fascinating stories from McManus's personal life and ministry, paired with fresh biblical teaching and profound insights, will astonish and challenge readers to break free from negative habits, destructive emotions, and other strongholds that hinder lasting transformation and to turn toward a life marked by enlightenment, nobility, and virtue.

 boundariesdvd

Boundaries, by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend, addresses specific issues that confront today's Christians.
Issues such as:

- Living a life out of control
- Having people take advantage of us
- Having trouble saying no
- Being disappointed with God because of unanswered prayers...and many more vital issues.

A boundary is a personal property line that marks those things for which we are responsible. In other words, boundaries define who we are and who we are not. They impact all areas of our lives:

Physical boundaries help us determine who may touch us and under what circumstances.  Mental boundaries give us the freedom to have our own thoughts and opinions.  Emotional boundaries help us deal with our own emotions and disengage from the harmful, manipulative emotions of others.   Spiritual boundaries help us to distinguish God's will from our own and give us renewed awe for our Creator.

Having clear boundaries is essential to a healthy, balanced lifestyle, isn't it? Often, Christians focus so much on being loving and unselfish that they forget their own limits and limitations.

Be Still is an extraordinary film that demonstrates contemplative reflection as a vital part of our everyday lives and as a remedy for the ills of the frenzied, fast-paced modern world. Featuring interviews with some of today's most highly respected authors, educators, and ministers, Be Still examines the importance of silent, reflective prayer as a way to truly be open to receiving God's guidance. This remarkable film also features a useful "how to" section that shows how contemplative prayer can be used by anyone at anytime to better one's life and reaffirm that which is truly important.  nooma bullhorn

Jesus said that the most important thing in life is to love God and love people. It’s hard to love the people who hurt us and disagree with us, but this persevering love is the best and only way to show our deepest love for God.

 nooma flame

We love our jobs, we love our kids, we love a good burrito. When love is defined so broadly, it loses its significance. We may confuse friendship, commitment, or lust with love, but God intended us to experience something far deeper.

 nooma luggage

God didn’t intend for us to carry around the luggage of betrayal, pain and woundedness. The freedom we long for comes through forgiveness, not revenge. Maybe forgiving isn’t something you do for someone else, but what you do for yourself because it’s the only way to be free.

 nooma lump

Most of us have done things in our lives that we’re ashamed of. Some are small things, and some are devastating things. But no matter what we’ve done or how other people respond, it doesn’t change how God feels about us. Nothing can ever change his unconditional love for us.

 nooma rain

Things don’t always work out the way we want them to. So where is God when bad things happen? How can God just stand by and watch us suffer? Maybe it’s when we’re in storms of life that God gets an opportunity to remind us of how much he really loves us.

 nooma rhythm

Is how we live connected to something that has been in place since the beginning of time? Maybe Jesus didn’t come to start a new religion, but to show us how to live in tune with the life God has always planned for us.

 Nooma KICKBALL

What will really make us happy? We chase after what we think we’re missing – a new car, a different job, a thinner body – but these things never really satisfy. Can we learn to trust that God has something even better in mind? Can we learn to wait when answers don’t come right away?

The Power of a Whisper

The Power of a Whisper

Full-throttle faith resides in fully yielded hearts. In The Power of a Whisper: Hearing God, Having the Guts to Respond Ebook, Bill Hybels reveals the attitudes and actions that help us hear directly from heaven as we navigate the most significant challenges on earth.

theholegospel

WHAT DOES GOD EXPECT OF US?

Is our faith just about going to church, studying the Bible and avoiding the most serious sins-or does God expect more?

Have we embraced the whole gospel or a gospel with a hole in it?

Ten years ago, Rich Stearns came face-to-face with that question as he sat in a mud hut in Rakai, Uganda, listening to the heartbreaking story of an orphaned child. Stearns' journey there took much more than a long flight to Africa. It took answering God's call on his life, a call that tore him out of his corner office at one of America's most prestigious corporations-to walk with the poorest of the poor in our world.

The Hole in Our Gospel is the compelling true story of a corporate CEO who setaside worldly success for something far more significant, and discovered the full power of the gospel of Jesus Christ to change his own life. He uses his journey to demonstrate how the gospel-the whole gospel-was always meant  to be a world changing social revolution, a revolution that begins with us.

 Good Samaritan

Becoming a Good Samaritan

In a world struggling with poverty, AIDS, racism, genocide, child slavery, the disenfranchised (widows, orphans, and the disabled), and the environment, how can churches motivate the millions of potential Good Samaritans sitting in their pews to get involved? John Ortberg encourages "front-line" experts including Gary Haugen, Bishop Desmond Tutu, and Chuck Colson to weigh in. Six sessions.

Creating Life-Changing Moments:  Turning Common Practices into Holy Moments

 DVD PriscillaShirer

SEED - DVD 5: Five is one of 6 DVDs in a series designed to engage participants with relevant issues, spiritual truths, and captivating storytelling by best-selling author and teacher Priscilla Shirer. Five: The routine of sin in our lives happens more than we would like to admit. At first we may happen upon it by accident, but quickly we fall in to the routine of sinning. This session finds Priscilla speaking of the bad habits we seem to find ourselves in the middle of. Whether it is our fault or not, often times we keep going back to the same unhealthy cycles over and over again. Paul speaks of the same thing when he says in Romans that, "for that which I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do but am doing the very thing I hate. For the good that I wish, I do not do but I practice the very evil that I do not wish." (Session 5 is 8 minutes long)

A follow up to the profound message of Crazy Love, Pastor Francis Chan offers a compelling invitation to understand, embrace, and follow the Holy Spirit’s direction in our lives.

In the name of the Father, the Son, and … the Holy Spirit. We pray in the name of all three, but how often do we live with an awareness of only the first two? As Jesus ascended into heaven, He promised to send the Holy Spirit—the Helper—so that we could be true and living witnesses for Christ. Unfortunately, today’s church has admired the gift but neglected to open it.

Breakthrough author Francis Chan rips away paper and bows to get at the true source of the church’s power—the Holy Spirit. Chan contends that we’ve ignored the Spirit for far too long, and we are reaping the disastrous results. Thorough scriptural support and compelling narrative form Chan’s invitation to stop and remember the One we’ve forgotten, the Spirit of the living God.
