New Emphasis on Adult Spiritual Formation Classes

4seasons

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.  2 Peter 3:18

At the very center of our purpose as a congregation is Jesus' command to make disciples by teaching them to obey everything he taught (Matthew 28:20). On September 8th the first installment of a three-year cycle of GROW Classes for adults will be introduced. The purpose of our new classes is help us as a church do what Jesus has commanded by forming an intentional, progressive journey of spiritual transformation accessible to all adults.

The classes have several features in common. Typically, the classes are for either 8, 10 or 12 weeks and run during the Fall, Winter and Spring terms. The goals of these classes will be to deepen a person's knowledge of the Bible and the core doctrines of the Christian faith while providing a context to experience Christian community. Our hope is that these classes will draw new and growing Christians into deepening relationships with God and one another. Because every opportunity to be together offers a context to intentionally welcome guests, our adult classes can be a place for people to practice Trinity's Relational Covenant as they extend hospitality to one another.

Stories in Ephesians: Finding Ourselves in Christ

brancheswebA new GROW class will begin this Sunday.  Finding Ourselves in Christ is especially appropriate for those who are newer to Trinity or just want to meet others and spend some time getting acquainted with Trinity's Ministry Staff, but anyone is welcome to attend. Each week a member of Trinity's Ministry Staff will guide the class through a chapter from the book of Ephesians. This is a great time to grow deeper spiritually and meet some great people. The group will meet for seven consecutive weeks beginning on October 6, at 10:45am. Pastor Tom Anderson will host the class each week in Pastor Phil Hakanson's office (200A).

Discipleship Defined

apple on branchHere is our working definition of what discipleship is for our church-wide emphasis on discipleship:

Discipleship is a lifelong journey of transformation toward Christ-likeness. It is both deeply personal and happens best in deepening community; it is accomplished by the Holy Spirit, yet calls for our heartfelt response. It is Christ's invitation to abundant life, for the sake of God's redemptive purpose for the world.”

One Step Closer to Knowing

leaveswebThrough study of God's Word, discussion, and reflection of U2's 2004 album, "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb", we will devote ourselves each week to taking one step closer to knowing ourselves and God.  By the guidance of the Holy Spirit and God's healing power, we will defuse the potentially fatal ticking organ known as the human heart. This fun, interactive and risky bomb deactivation class offers an excellent opportunity to invite a friend to church. The bomb-squad, led by Doug & Lisa Camp, will meet in the Chapel at 9:00am.

Profiling God

rootswebOur view of God defines who we are and how we live our lives. Our actions in life are traced back to what we believe. When we determine God's attributes based on our own opinions, we no longer worship the true God but one of our own making.  Therefore, we should strive to learn God's character and repent of any incorrect assumptions. Come and meet the God of the Bible. We'll be meeting in the Conference Room at 9:00am. Facilitated by Bill Lane and Bill Bristol.

Exploring the New Testament

rootswebDo you have questions about the Bible?  Have you ever wondered how the Bible came to be or why we can have confidence in it? The New Testament tells the story of Jesus' life, death and resurrection.  It conveys the teachings of Jesus and how his earliest followers wrestled with how to live the gospel life.

Through this interactive class we will look at the whole of the New Testament with an eye to addressing the questions posed by class participants. Gathering in the Chapel at 10:45am, this class will be led by Pastor Peter, Barbara Ettinger and Paul Shekleton.

Spiritual Mentoring

fruitwebDo you desire to invest in the spiritual lives of others? Consider joining this small group discussion. We will read together Spiritual Mentoring - A Guide for Seeking and Giving Direction by Anderson & Reese. The book draws on classical spiritual writers and examines different spiritual practices. Spiritual mentoring can enhance both our intimacy with God and our awareness of His presence. Facilitated by Karen Tullson at 10:45am in Pastor Phil Hakanson's office (200A).

Some GROW Classes are organized around a common interest or affinity or are for men or women exclusively. The topics are chosen by the class leaders and those who attend. Please feel free to try out a class.  Contact Pastor Peter or the class leaders to learn more.  When a class meets throughout the year you are invited and encouraged to attend at any time.

Parenting Children Course from Alpha

fruitwebTPCC

Everyone knows that children don’t arrive with an instruction manual! Yet no role we undertake is more important than the raising of children.   Parents can face a bewildering range of choices about how to raise children effectively. Discovering we are not alone in the challenges we face and picking up ideas from other parents can make a huge difference. We can all learn how to make even the happiest family better.  Meeting our children's deepest needs, setting healthy boundaries, developing a family identity and passing on important values takes skill and commitment.  The Parenting Children Course is for all parents, married or single, step-parents, prospective parents or care-givers of children from birth through 10 years old. We’ll be meeting in the Chapel from 8:30 to 9:30am.

Clashing Faiths: Life During the Times of the Judges and Now

leaveswebIsrael had strong leadership under Moses and Joshua during the exodus, and later under David and Solomon. But in the intervening years, the Israelites lived in a spiritually pluralistic society. The society of Canaan was a mixture of pagan and believing peoples. Today, as then, individual believers work and live among a great variety of gods - not only those of other formal religions, but also the gods of wealth, celebrity, pleasure, ideology, achievement. Christians reading these texts today must ask: how can we be sure to follow God rather than the idols of our society and neighbors? How can we renew ourselves when we fail or fall? We'll be following a study guide by author Tim Keller. This class gathers in the Chapel at 8:30am and is led by Bill Bristol & Dan Catuccio.

Discovering Trinity

brancheswebtcc logo oceanA six-week course highlighting the history, vision and values of the Evangelical Covenant Church, as well as a closer look at our own local congregation: who we are, what we do, and how we do it.  In addition, there will be a chance to meet Trinity's Ministry Staff.  While this course is an important part of preparation for membership, a commitment to Trinity is not expected for participants.  A simple interest in learning more about the church is enough!  Present members of Trinity are also welcome and encouraged to attend.  This class meets at 10:00am in the Chapel and begins on February 1st and concludes on March 8th.
